Refrigerator Leaking Water?
First protect the floor, then find the source. Most refrigerator leaks trace to one of four places — and all of them are fixable.

A refrigerator leak is a plumbing problem the size of a shoebox: the water is coming from one of a few known places, and finding the right one is the whole job. Repairly technicians trace the source instead of guessing, quote the fix in writing, and back the work with The Repairly Warranty — 1 year, parts and labor.
Where the water usually comes from
The defrost drain. The number one source. Frost melts off the evaporator coil several times a day and runs down a small drain — when food debris or a knot of ice blocks it, meltwater backs up under the crisper drawers and works its way to the floor. Clearing it is the visible fix; correcting the freeze-up behind it is what makes the fix last.
The water inlet valve and supply line. Everything feeding your ice maker and dispenser runs through a small solenoid valve at the back. Los Angeles water is hard, and scale slowly chews valve seats until they drip. A plastic supply line that’s gone brittle behind a fridge nobody has moved in a decade fails the same way.
The drain pan. The pan under the unit is supposed to hold meltwater while it evaporates. A cracked pan — or a heat exchange problem that sends it more water than it can evaporate — leaves a puddle that appears and “disappears.”
Condensation you shouldn’t have. A flattened door gasket lets humid air in, and it condenses somewhere you eventually see. On the Westside, where marine air is part of the deal, a tired gasket shows up as mystery moisture months before it shows up as warm food.
What you can safely do right now
- Protect the floor. Towels under and around the unit, rugs pulled back, and a look inside the cabinet toe kick if the puddle touched it.
- Close the supply valve if the leak is at the back. The small shutoff under the sink or behind the fridge stops a supply side leak completely.
- Check the drain pan. On most units the base grille comes off by hand and the pan slides out. If it’s full and cracked, you’ve found your leak — if it’s bone dry, the water is coming from higher up.
- Leave ice alone. If you can see ice sheeting inside the freezer floor, don’t chip it. The drain and coil underneath puncture easily, and that turns a drain clearing into a sealed system repair.
How the visit works
The $79 diagnostic finds the source — waived when you proceed with the repair — and you get a written estimate before any work begins. Common valves, lines, and drain parts ride on the truck, so most leak repairs finish in one visit.
Why timing matters
Water finds hardwood and cabinet toe kicks faster than you'd think, and a slow leak you mop weekly does more damage than a dramatic one you catch today. Get the source found before the flooring bill dwarfs the repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is water pooling inside, under the crisper drawers?
That's the classic sign of a clogged defrost drain. Every defrost cycle melts frost into a drain that runs to an evaporation pan underneath — when it clogs or freezes, the water backs up under the drawers and eventually onto your floor. We clear the drain, correct what froze it, and check the heater circuit so it doesn't return.
The leak is behind the fridge. Is that serious?
Water at the back usually means the inlet valve or the water supply line feeding the ice maker and dispenser. Los Angeles hard water scales these parts until they weep. It's worth prompt attention because that line is under household water pressure — turn off the fridge's supply valve and call.
What should I do before the technician arrives?
Towels down, rugs out of the way, and if the leak is from the supply side, close the small shutoff valve behind or under the sink that feeds the fridge. Don't chip at any ice you find inside — the drain and coil behind it are easy to puncture.
What does fixing a leak cost?
You'll have a written estimate before any work begins. The $79 diagnostic visit finds the actual source — drain, valve, line, or pan — and it's waived when you proceed with the repair.
Is a leaking refrigerator worth repairing?
Almost always. Leaks come from inexpensive parts far more often than from anything structural, and fixing one protects the much bigger investment — your floors and cabinetry. If we ever find damage that changes the math, we tell you plainly.
Something else acting up?
Whatever the symptom, the visit works the same way: a $79 diagnostic, waived when you proceed with the repair, and a written estimate before any work begins.
