Oven Not Heating?
Whether it's a wall oven or the oven in your range, 'won't heat' almost always traces to one of four parts — and one honest test narrows it fast.

An oven that won’t heat, won’t hold temperature, or bakes unevenly is running one of the oldest playbooks in appliance repair. Repairly’s certified, background checked technicians work on wall ovens and range ovens across Los Angeles daily — gas and electric, from builder standard to the double wall oven surviving from a nineties remodel — and back every repair with The Repairly Warranty: 1 year, parts and labor.
What “not heating” usually means
Gas: the igniter. The hot surface igniter has to glow white hot to pull the safety valve open. As it ages it glows orange, takes longer each week, and finally can’t open the valve at all — you hear the oven “trying” and smell nothing, because the safety did its job. This is the most common gas oven repair there is.
Electric: the bake element or a relay. A failed element often announces itself — blistering, a bright spot, even a small pop — but hidden bake elements on newer ovens fail invisibly. When the element tests fine, the control board relay feeding it is next in line.
Both: the temperature sensor. The sensor tells the control what’s true inside. When it drifts, you get long preheats, burnt edges, doughy centers, and a family that stops trusting recipes. An oven thermometer is the honest witness here.
The quiet ones. A sagging door hinge or flattened gasket bleeds heat and mimics a heating fault, and a self clean cycle is famous for pushing marginal parts over the edge — a surprising share of dead ovens were self cleaned the night before.
What you can safely do right now
- Rule out the modes. Sabbath mode, demo mode, a control lockout, or a delayed start setting will all produce a perfectly “broken” oven. Your manual’s reset sequence is worth two minutes.
- Reset the breaker once. Electric ovens use a double pole breaker that can half trip. Flip it fully off, then on, one time. If it trips again, leave it off and call.
- Run the thermometer test. Set 350°, give it 20 minutes, and read an independent oven thermometer. The gap between promise and reality is exactly what we need to hear when you call.
- Know your line. If you ever smell gas — not the brief whiff of an igniter lighting, but gas — don’t troubleshoot. Shut the oven off, air the room, and call SoCalGas before you call us.
Old houses, odd circuits, honest answers
A lot of Los Angeles cooks in kitchens wired generations ago. Pasadena Craftsmans, Hancock Park revivals, and mid century Valley ranches run modern ovens on circuits and cutouts their builders never imagined, and that shapes the right repair call. We give you a written estimate before any work begins, install OEM parts, and if replacement genuinely wins — it happens — you’ll hear it from us first.
Why timing matters
An oven limping at 275° ruins dinners quietly, but the real deadline is the calendar: half our urgent oven calls arrive the week of a holiday. If yours is struggling now, fix it while the stakes are a weeknight, not the one meal of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions
My gas oven clicks and glows but never lights. What's wrong?
That glow is the hot surface igniter — and one that glows but never lights the burner is usually too weak to pull the gas valve open. It's the single most common gas oven failure, the part is on our trucks, and the repair typically finishes in one visit.
My electric oven is dead but the cooktop works. Why?
They often run on different legs of the circuit or different controls. A tripped double pole breaker can halve the power so some functions work and others don't, and a failed bake element or control relay does the same. Reset the breaker fully off then on once — if it trips again, stop and call; breakers that re-trip are telling you something.
Why does my oven run hot or cold even after preheating?
The oven temperature sensor drifts as it ages and the control believes it. If an oven thermometer shows you're 25 degrees or more off setpoint, the sensor or its calibration is the likely fix — a modest repair that transforms baking.
What will an oven repair cost?
You'll have a written estimate before any work begins. The $79 diagnostic identifies the failed part — igniter, element, sensor, or control — and it's waived when you proceed with the repair.
My wall oven is decades old and fits a custom cabinet. Should I even try to repair it?
Usually yes — and often more emphatically than you'd expect. Older wall oven cutout sizes were discontinued, so replacement frequently means cabinet modification on top of the new unit. Those ovens were built to be serviced, parts are often still available, and we'll tell you honestly if yours is the exception.
Something else acting up?
Whatever the symptom, the visit works the same way: a $79 diagnostic, waived when you proceed with the repair, and a written estimate before any work begins.
